It's hard to compare different waves to each other, but maybe you could say its a similar version of Teahupoo only right, matching its power and quick arrival out of the deep West Australian water. One difference in particular is that after its initial break on the shallow shelf, it quickly falls into a deep section where it can hold you down for a very long time. Fortunately, the clouds and unfavorable winds remained at bay and Qualifying Rounds for both the Girls and the Boys were run in rippable three- to five-foot waves. The constantly changing waves at Playa Venao have tested the adaptability of the 300-plus junior athletes in the competition. Picking the right equipment and selecting the right spot to sit in the lineup has proven critical. The problem is that from 20-minute heat to 20-minute heat, the wave will shift and a strategy may become obsolete. "I had it all planned for where I was going to sit and which waves to look for, but when I was running down the beach for my heat, I was watching it and it had totally changed," Ellie-Jean Coffey (AUS) said. "You have to be able to adapt out there because you never really know what to expect with these tides." The shattered heat strategy didn't much affect Coffey, as she went on to win her heat convincingly, putting the other three surfers in the combination situation, requiring two higher scores to match her. Coffey's score of 15.83 was the highest of the day in the Girls division. Numerous surfers faced the same challenges as Coffey. "The waves aren't coming in at the same place so you've got to move around a lot, " said Chelsea Tuach (BAR), a top ten finisher in 2011, who advanced through her Girls Qualifying Round 2 heat. "The paddle out can be pretty hard, so there's no point on going on a wave if you can't ride it all the way in and get a good score." Other standouts in the Girls competition included Barbara Segatto (BRA), Karelle Poppke (TAH), Quincy Davis (USA) and Carina Duarte (POR), who took down South Africa's Sarah Baum, one of the top-rated competitors in the event. Another highlight of the morning came in Round 1 when Emily Gussoni of Costa Rica advanced through her heat in second behind Vania Torres (POR). At just 12 years old, Gussoni is one of the youngest competitors in the event. "It's my second [ISA World Championship event], and to get into the second round makes me feel very happy," she said. "I am very proud because I know I did my best." As the tide filled in, the challenging morning, low-tide conditions turned into long, workable walls resulting in some dynamic surfing and high scores. "It turns from pretty much a closeout to a super fun pointbreak kind of wave, where you can get five or six turns on a good one," said Creed McTaggart (AUS), who won his Qualifying Round 3 heat with a two-wave score of 14.84. McTaggart and Team Australia are staying up the road in Pedasi, where the Opening Ceremony was held, so they're having to make the early morning commute daily. It's not bugging the young world traveler, who's in Panama for the first time. "[Panama] is a pretty different place to have a contest; it's actually pretty rad," he said. "We're staying a half-hour away, but the drive every morning is so cool; it's like going through old Bali, down toward Ulu's (Uluwatu)." The top performance in the Boys competition came from Brazil's Deivid Silva, who was a wave magnet in his heat, finding the biggest and longest waves to execute ferocious snaps and an array of aerial maneuvers. He finished with a two-wave total of 18.30, which included the highest single-wave score of the event, 9.97. Other high-scoring standouts included Kaoli Kahokuloa (HAW), Tom Cloarec (FRA) and Tommy Boucaut (FRA) in the Under-18s, and Max Armstrong (RSA), Ian Gentil (HAW) and Vitor Bernardo (BRA) in the Under-16s. Early in the event, Australia, Brazil, Hawaii, Japan, Portugal, South Africa, Tahiti and USA are still running strong, with multiple athletes still in the Qualifying Round (no Repechage heats have been run, so no surfers are yet eliminated). The top eight teams qualify to compete at the 2013 ISA China Cup. "We just love Panama and its great waves. In one day of surfing is like surfing 3 or 4 surf spots," said Fernando Aguerre, the Presidnet of the ISA. "The weather has been incredible, and the vibe at the event is wonderful. I wish this event would last one whole month." Surfing action resumes tomorrow morning, April 18, with the first Repechage heats. According to Surfline, the Official Forecaster of the event, waves should be increasing in size for the next couple days, capping out in the six- to seven-foot range by the weekend. Gilmore is back on top after an emotional victory at the Roxy Pro Gold Coast at her home break of Snapper Rocks today. Gilmore, 24, scored a 9.2 wave in the last minute to defeat Sydney's Laura Enever 16.37 to 14.2 in the 30-minute final to reclaim the No.1 spot on the ASP world rankings. A position Gilmore lost to Moore exactly one year ago at the Snapper Rocks event. Gilmore said this season already feels like a complete flip-side to last year, when she was attacked by a man wielding an iron bar at her Tweed Heads home shortly before the first event of the year. Gilmore added that the women's standard was unsurpassed this year and twenty-year-old Enever was a definite contender. Gilmore advanced to the final with a convincing 18.30 to 15.00 win against Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS) in the semi-final, while Enever locked in a final-minute ride to defeat Tyler Wright (AUS) 16.70 to 16.17 in the first semi-final. Enever went one better than she did at last year's Roxy Pro Gold Coast when she finished third to feature in her first world tour final. The now world ranked no.2 surfer pushed Gilmore all the way but was forced to settle for second against the in-form Gilmore. The win was Gilmore's fourth Roxy Pro Gold Coast title after victories in 2010, 2009 and as a wildcard in 2005. Her wins in 2010 and 2009 were the launch pad for her successful World Title campaigns, while her victory today was a triumphant return to the Snapper Rocks victory dais. A gracious Enever congratulated Gilmore and was ecstatic to make her first World Tour final. Bells Beach will host the next ASP Men's and Women's World Title events from April 3 to 14. More at http://www.quiksilverpro.com.au SNAPPER ROCKS, Queensland/Australia (Sunday, March 4, 2012) -- The final day of the Quiksilver and Roxy Pro Gold Coast presented by Land Rover culminated today with perennial ASP World Title threat Taj Burrow (AUS), 33, and four-time ASP Women's World Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 24, taking the respective wins in clean two-to-three foot (1 metre) waves at the primary venue of Snapper Rocks. Burrow defeated dangerous South American Adriano De Souza (BRA), 25, in a Final that came down to the wire. De Souza caught a wave in the dying minutes and launched into a massive air-reverse, requiring a 7.87 out of a possible 10 to take the lead. The judges deliberated until after the siren sounded and when it was announced that De Souza came a mere 0.27 short, Burrow was chaired up the beach and declared the 2012 Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast champion. De Souza finished runner-up at the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast for the second time, after coming 2nd to Joel Parkinson (AUS), 30, in 2009. De Souza was easily one of the event's top performers this season with gouging turns and inverted aerials taking him to a podium finish. Burrow used a heat-high wave score of 9.43 to win with a total of 15.86 to de Souza's 15.60 much to the delight of a raucous capacity Snapper Rocks crowd who adopted the West Australian as one of their own. Burrow assumes the No.1 ranking as the World Tour heads to Bells Beach from April 3-14, while de Souza on No.2 is well placed to improve on last year's finish of fifth on the world rankings. Snapper Rocks has proved a happy hunting ground for Burrow, who has appeared in the past three finals, winning in 2010 and finishing second to Kelly Slater (USA) last year. Burrow said victory was sweet after last year's loss to Kelly Slater. Earlier in the semi-finals, Burrow defeated South African Jordy Smith 15.56 to 14.20 while de Souza defeated crowd favourite Josh Kerr (AUS) 14.16 to 13.57 in the dying seconds. Julian Wilson (AUS), 23, 2012 ASP Top 34 sophomore, found form in his Round 3 heat against Adam Melling (AUS), 26, posting the highest heat total of the day, an 18.57 out of a possible 20. On his third different board in as many heats, it appears that the young natural-footer has dialed in his equipment moving forward. "I lost in this round last year in a close one against Taj (Burrow) and went on to lose a bit early in the next few events so I was nervous before that one," Wilson said. "I did want to make a statement. In my first two heats I wasn't myself - it didn't feel like it was coming together for me. The day saw some monster aerials and huge carving turns in punchy 2 foot (1 meter) surf. Nat Young (USA) showed that despite the small conditions it's still possible to earn some big scores after he posted the first perfect 10-point-ride of the Australian Open Of Surfing. "That was the best wave I've had at Manly," Young said. "I just made sure I didn't fall because it was such a good wave and I didn't want to ruin it. I just got here yesterday morning from Brazil and was jet-lagged all day. It was a mission to get here, but that heat was worth it, I'm glad to be here." Adrian Buchan (AUS) advanced to the next round after finishing 2nd to Brent Savage (AUS) in an exciting round of 96 battle. This is Buchan's first event of 2012 and the Central Coaster is looking sharp, posting an excellent 8.00 (out of a possible 10) in the last couple minutes of the heat. "It was fun out there," Buchan said. "The waves I got score on I feel like they were tiny, I was just trying to catch the ones that hugged the bank. This is kind of a home event for me, I'm staying with me fiancee's parents house, we spend a bit of time there so it's nice to wake up in familiar surroundings and drive down in your own car, I've also got a lot of friends down here. I'd love to do well here, let's just hope the swell hangs around." Tiago Pires (PRT) almost missed his opening heat at the Australian Open Of Surfing today. Pires landed at Sydney International airport after a long flight from Portugal this morning and after a slow trip through customs he arrived at Manly Beach five minutes after his heat started. The elite ASP World Title Series surfer immediately went to work and still managed to win the heat, despite the other three surfer having a 5 minute heat start. "I was hoping to be in one of the lat heats of the day, but when I saw I was in heat 8 I knew it would be tight," Pires said. "I landed at 8am and my shaper Chilli picked me up from the airport, I was getting my board ready and getting changed in the car and paddled out late for my heat. The waves have some push and they're fun, I feel good to win that one." Josh Kerr (AUS) came flying out of the gates in his round of 96 heat today and scored the highest heat total of the event so far - 18.27 (out of a possible 20). Kerr launched a variety of technical aerial manoeuvres, giving the judges and the crowd exactly what they want to see. "There was a couple of little waves out there and the wind is really good for airs today," Kerr said. "It was hard to get the good ones, I wanted to go out there and do some turns, but it was so choppy and bumpy, but those chops are good to do some jumps off. I didn't realise I the highest score the event, that's cool. I was just stoked to do a stalefish air-reverse." Jordy Smith (ZAF) took out his round of 96 heat that was stacked some exciting up and coming surfers Matt Banting (AUS), Thomas Woods (AUS) and Krystian Kymerson (BRA) who finished 2nd, 3rd and 4rd respectively. In 2011 Smith finished 7th on the ASP World Title series despite missing two events with an rib injury. "That heat was pretty tough," Smith said. "The surf wasn't great, but the grommets are doing well. They're doing airs all over the show, so I just copied them. I haven't surfed in a comp since Pipe last year, so it's good to get going again and get my feet in the wax. It was good to have a break and get my rib injury healed, work on my board and get ready for this year." Taj Burrow (AUS) posted an impressive win in the last heat of the day, finding a couple of double ups and executing his trademark fins free turns. Burrow was the winner of the last Men's ASP event in Manly back in 1999. "You mind surf every waves before you go out for a heat, and I was surfing a lot better from the beach," Burrow said. "I'm just finding my feet for the first heat of the event, and I've been waiting all day so it felt good to finally get in the water. I've got some good memories of Manly, I had a great time last time I competed here. I love the US Open and I'm stoked we've now got one here in Australia and I'm here to win it."]]> Thu, 16 Feb 2012 11:05:28 GMT http://www.comproyvendosurf.com/component/option,com_hwdvideoshare/Itemid,12/task,viewvideo/video_id,609/ <![CDATA[IBA World Tour 2012]]> http://www.ibaworldtour.com Filmed By: Todd Barnes & Chris Bryan ( Phantom Footage ) Edited By: Todd Barnes]]> Tue, 14 Feb 2012 10:55:00 GMT http://www.comproyvendosurf.com/component/option,com_hwdvideoshare/Itemid,12/task,viewvideo/video_id,608/ <![CDATA[[31] Slow Motion bodyboarding tricks; HD closeups at Waikiki]]> Slow motion closeup action shots of two skinny teenage boys and myself boogie boarding / bodyboarding at Waikiki "Walls," at the end of Kapahulu Ave. Stand up 360's and other bodyboarding tricks. To the delight of the competitors, barreling waves in the 6-8 foot range (2-2.5 meters) breaking in both directions produced the first 10-point rides of the event at Cacimba do Padre beach, in Fernando de Noronha, Pernambuco, Brazil. The day's highlights were provided by Bernardo Miranda (BRA), who received a 10-point ride and set the record for the event's highest-heat total of a 19.30 out of a possible 20 points. "I saw Sebastien (Zietz, HAW) catch a right that scored a 9-something on a nice wave, and then another came towards me and I thought: this is my 10-point wave," said Miranda. "I felt it was going to be a good score because I got past a bunch of sections in the barrel and then the 10 was announced. I'm really happy because I saw a lot of other waves that people caught that I thought were 10's, but I guess the judges were waiting for something extra, which I got on that wave." With a 10-point ride of his own, Mason Ho (HAW) qualified directly into the Round of 16 with some spectacular tube riding. "That was one of the best heats in my life," claimed Ho. "The color of the wave was amazing and I don't ever get stressed out here. This is my fifth time here and I feel right at home. I caught some great waves today, conditions were classic with incredible tubes and Noronha is already one of my favorite places to surf, along with Hawaii and West Australia." Showing some impressive surfing in his heat, Raoni Monteiro (BRA) is set in his objective to become an unprecedented 2-time event winner at the Hang Loose Pro Contest. "I feel a lot of happiness and emotion to be in such a marvelous place and going after this title once again," said Monteiro. "I saw Bernardo (Miranda) get a 10, then Mason (Ho), so I wanted one too. I paddled into a good one, which was tough to surf because it closed out at the end. I'm stoked to have gotten a top score and with todays results. The waves were incredible all day and I'm sure everyone was excited about that." Round 3 was a No-Losers Round of 24 and those who didn't make it directly into the Round of 16 will got another shot at qualifying on Friday morning at 7am local time. The surfers that reach the Round of 16 will automatically receive 2,400 ASP World Ranking points which will put them ahead of rankings leader, John John Florence (HAW) who has 2,000 points from his victory at the ASP 5-Star contest held at Pipeline, Hawaii. Ten surfers of the ASP World Ranking will qualify as one of the Top-34 for the ASP Dream Tour in next year. The Hang Loose Pro Contest is an ASP South America sanctioned event and is the introductory ASP World Prime event of 2012, sponsored by Hang Loose and in partnership with the State of Pernambuco through EMPETUR, the Secretary of Tourism, the Administration of Fernando de Noronha, Projeto TAMAR and co-sponsored by Overboard, Bleat, Hot Water, Central Surf, Sthill, WQSurf, Tent Beach, Star Surf, Supertubes, K&K, Cut Wave and Red Beach.
